Ultimate Burger Battle: Bringing Local Love to the Table

Northumberland County, it’s time to burger for a cause!

This November, we’re turning up the heat (and the grills) for The Ultimate Burger Battle: a month-long, community-powered showdown where good food meets great purpose.

From November 1 to 30, 11 local restaurants across Northumberland County are serving up their own take on the “Ultimate Burger,” each competing for your vote and bragging rights as the best burger in town. Every burger purchased helps support United Way Northumberland’s community programs, ensuring families and children across our county have access to the essentials they need to thrive.

It’s that simple, and delicious.

This initiative is part of a national movement, with United Ways across Canada joining forces to raise funds in the tastiest way possible. Last year alone, tens of thousands of burgers were enjoyed from coast to coast — and every bite helped create meaningful change in local communities.

Here in Northumberland, those funds help power our in-house programs like school nutrition initiatives, which ensure students start their day with the fuel they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

Throughout November, we’ll be sharing updates, photos, and stories from the battle — and we invite you to join the fun. Tag us and your favourite restaurant when you post your burger photos, and show your #LocalLove and #NoCoPride.

Because when our community comes together, even over something as simple as a burger, we can create lasting change for the people and families who call Northumberland home.

RadioThon 2025 was one for the books!

Over three incredible days, our community came together to support Northumberland 89.7 FM — and together we raised more than $14,000! A special thank-you goes to Cameco, who stepped up as our sponsor for this event your support of local radio makes a real difference, and we are so grateful. 

A huge thank-you as well to the amazing team that made this possible: Peggy Brooks, Larry Crook, Debbie Frye, Trevor Joice, Rebecca Kelly, Ray Kies, and Maria Papaioannoy. Along with our dedicated on-air hosts, volunteers, and guests, you brought the spirit of local radio to life.

And what would a radio station be without music? This year, under the leadership of our brilliant engineer Trevor Joice and with the support of Ray Kies,  Long & McQuade and our keen student volunteer Ben, we brought fantastic live music right to our parking lot! Huge thanks to Greatest of Ease, Alan Black and the Steady Band, Joslynn Burford, the Hobo Gents, and Marie Lachner and Heather Cluney of String Mashup for filling the air with incredible sound and spirit.

We’re also deeply grateful to the local businesses who donated items to our auction, and to those who kept us fueled with fantastic food and plenty of caffeine to power through three full days!  Your support reminds us why shopping local matters; when you support small businesses, you’re also supporting the heart of our community. 

RadioThon isn’t just a fundraiser, it’s a celebration of community, connection, and the value of local radio. We are so grateful for every listener, donor, and partner who helped make this event such a success.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINATIONS

Interested in Serving on Northumberland 89.7 FM’s Board of Directors?

Board leadership is critical to the continuing success of Northumberland 89.7 FM (N897). To that end, we would like to hear from community members who would be interested in serving on N897’s Board of Directors. This is an unpaid volunteer role requiring, at minimum, the ability to attend evening Board of Director meetings on a bi-monthly basis.

To express your interest, please email
chairperson@northumberland897.ca by November 15, 2025. Your email must include: a résumé that demonstrates your work, volunteer, and board experience; a cover letter, addressed to the “N897 Nominating Committee”, that references the skills and abilities you would bring to the Board; and the names and contact information (i.e., a telephone number and an email address) for two character references.

Applications received after November 15, 2025, will not be accepted, so please make sure to email your resume, cover letter, and character reference information by the due date.
